We are thrilled to share that the IRS has approved our designation as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. This step solidifies and bolsters our commitment to keeping local news in local hands and creates a new path forward for community journalism. We asked our partner and fiscal sponsor Jim Friedlich, Executive Director and CEO of The Lenfest Institute for Journalism, to share his thoughts about our role as we become an independent nonprofit: “The National Trust for Local News has brought outstanding impact-investment expertise to the financial challenges of community news. The leadership team is unparalleled and off to an extraordinarily fast start—structuring and leading community news acquisitions, engaging a broad array of local and national funders, and advising donors and investors in digital news start-ups, local newspapers and public media. NTLN fills a unique and uniquely important role in rebuilding local news in America. We are delighted to support their work as funders and as partners.” Thank you, Jim, and the team at Lenfest for serving as our fiscal sponsor.
