Maine Trust for Local News earns multiple awards in Better Newspaper Competition

The Maine Trust for Local News was a big winner in the 2025 Better Newspaper Competition presented by the New England Newspaper & Press Association. The professional trade organization announced the honorees at a banquet during the New England Newspaper Convention in March. Newsrooms across the Maine Trust, including The Portland Press Herald, Morning Sentinel and Sun Journal, earned multiple recognitions for reporting, photojournalism, columns, feature writing and advertising, including:

  • First place for The Portland Press Herald in the Housing News category

    for “In Saco, the anatomy of a housing proposal toppled by residents,” by investigative reporter Dylan Tusinski, news editor Eric Russell and former staff writer John Terhune.

  • First place for The Portland Press Herald in the Special Section/Advertising Supplement category for “Modern Pest – Missy on the Move,” a sponsored collaboration with advertiser Modern Pest Services.

  • First place for The Portland Press Herald in the Sponsored Content category for “Thank a Nurse,” a campaign to encourage people to write public thank-you notes to nurses who made an impact.

  • Second place for Press Herald culture columnist Leslie Bridgers in the Serious Columns category.

  • Second place for Press Herald staff writer Drew Bonifant in the Sports Feature category for, “Love of field hockey, and her teammates, keeps Falmouth senior going.”

  • Second place for the Sun Journal in the Sponsored Content category.

  • Second place for the Morning Sentinel in the Special Section/Advertising Supplement category.

  • Third place for Press Herald staff writer Gillian Graham in the Human Interest Feature Story category for, “They’re the last cobblers left in Maine – and they’re busier than ever.

  • Third place for Press Herald staff writer Megan Gray in the Racial, Ethnic or Gender Issue Coverage category for “The first transgender woman to compete in Miss Maine is a farmer who loves to dance.”

  • Third place for Press Herald staff photographer Gregory Rec in the Personality Photo category for his photo of Pandora LaCasse.
